EAP 1268 Babad Diponegoro Vol. 1

These two volumes are the transliterations (romanized versions) of the two-volume Babad Dipanagara (autobiography of Prince Diponegoro of Yogyakarta, 1785-1855, leader of the Java War, 1825-30) published by Albert Rusche & Co in Surakarta in 1908-9.They were prepared for Mr Muhammad Yamin, (1903-1962), a prominent nationalist leader, who had been tasked by the Japanese military administration in Indonesia (1942-45) with preparing a biography of Diponegoro from a nationalist perspective. This was duly published in June 1945, but after the war and during the Indonesian War of Independence/ Revolution (1945-49), Yamin revised his text and included new sources one of which was the Rusche edition of Diponegoro’s autobiography. A senior Surakarta court official, KRT Tirtodiningrat, was tasked with making this transliteration in 1946, and Yamin’s revised text was ultimately published by the Yayasan Pembangunan in Jakarta in 1951 under the title ‘Sedjarah Peperangan Dipanagara: Pahlawan Kemerdekaan Indonesia’. This two-volume handwritten transliteration was given to the Javanese language and literature expert, Professor CC Berg (1900-1990), who was in Surakarta after the war, and he was tasked with advising Yamin on the contents of the Diponegoro autobiography. In 1970 on his retirement from Leiden University Prof Berg gave these handwritten transliterations to Peter Carey for his Oxford DPhil thesis research in Diponegoro (‘Pangeran Dipanagara and the Making of the Java War, 1825-30’) which was successfully defended in Oxford in November 1975.The transliteration made by Tirtodiningrat is interesting evidence of a living historical tradition and the willingness of copyists to omit selective sections of the original text.  This happened in Tirtodiningrat’s case when he omitted in its entirety the whole episode of the secret correspondence between Surakarta and Yogyakarta in March 1812 aimed at coordinating the two south-central Javanese courts resistance to the British. The history of this secret correspondence is given on pages 32-33 of volume I of the Rusche edition, but was entirely omitted by Tirtodiningrat because he thought it reflected badly on his court of Surakarta. The Yamin manuscript copies will eventually be given to Leiden University Library as part of their CC Berg collection.
