This is the 1840 Report of the American Bible Society (ABS). It was largely a reply to the formation of its counterpart the American and Foreign Bible Society. This new AFBS was formed in 1837, when it was found that the ABS was refusing to fund translations that correctly reflected the koine greek text. The original controversy was related to translations for India, specifically Bengali. But the philosophy of the American Bible Society was a policy of conciliation towards the Roman Catholic Church and its versions. This upset many of those who funded the ABS. The ABS was funded by protestants with the stipulation that the ABS translations would reflect only the text of the Authorized Version. This was thought to solve many problems, but it was not so easy. This controversy continued for decades and has not been satisfactorily settled. In 1904, the BFBS and the ABS both changed their charters to specifically authorize the use of new collations and many changes to the Greek text to be used for translations around the world. The new text was to be the text of Westcott and Hort. The exposure of the Westcott and Hort Text, as well as their fanciful theories (which B & K.
