Youjo Senki Volume 01 Deus Lo Vult [ Yen Press][ Kobo][ Kitzoku]
"Youjo Senki", loosely translated from Japanese as "The War Diaries of a Young Girl", and re-branded as "The Saga of Tanya The Evil" in English speaking countries, is a 'light' novel originally written in Japanese by an author operating under the pen name "Carlo Zen" in 2013, which was later translated into English by Emily Balistrieri and Kevin Steinbach in 2017. The series of novels has inspired comic book/manga, TV Anime, and Film Anime adaptations, and retains a growing cult following among fans of alternate history and fantasy fiction..The story begins with a theological debate between a recently murdered Corporate HR Manager who holds an atheistic Randian Objectivist worldview, and an otherworldly being, referred to as "Being X" by the lead character "Tanya", which could be either God, or the Devil seeking to deceive him by demanding praise in exchange for reincarnation. .The result of this debate is for the HR Manager to be banished and reborn as a young girl named "Tanya" into a version of purgatory approximating an alternate version of Germany in World War 1, in a universe where magic and miracles exist, along with a universal draft to military service for all citizens beginning at a very early age. Many reviewers have described Youjo Senki as an inverse "Book of Job", or at least a story with many parallels to the biblical tale..If she dies of anything but old age in this new world before repenting, her soul shall either cease to exist, or be sent straight to hell; however, as she has no desire to submit to the will of the entity that banished her to her current station in life, she elects instead to employ her knowledge towards attaining a meteoric rise through the ranks quickly enough to attain a position of safety, so that she can live comfortably, die of old age, and get reincarnated again after just to spite the being that sent her to where she now is. .However, things rarely go as planned, and her self-interested goal of survival at any cost, and disdain for altruism by anyone in the face of hardship ultimately forces her to fight against an entire world which was engineered specifically to crush her will to resist, and ultimately help her country (the German Empire) to win World War 1 in the process..Also notable is that throughout the initial book and those that follow, there are many references to Socio-Economic concepts, Military History, political theory, espionage strategies, and combat tactics employed by troops in a variety of scenarios adapted from real life, to the alternate history context of the story..If you enjoy reading military history, alternate history, science fiction, fantasy stories, or treaties on economic, religious, political, and military theory, you will enjoy this book.
