One free site was called An Old-Fashioned Education, apparently done by a Catholic schoolteacher who spent many hours fashioning the site with hundreds of links to public domain texts separated out into all the basic classes, K-12: grammar, history, science (Origin of the Species notably absent, though a lesser Darwin work was included), arithmetic, fine arts, and so on. It was a noble effort but unfortunately the website has not, as of this date (August 2018), been updated to https protocols and it's really not safe to click on the links to outdated (sans https) mirror sites of Project Gutenberg, the source of most of the texts. This e-text library is a sort of salute to that teacher's project -- all of these epubs have been pulled from PG's safe official site.Math majors will have to look on PG for books on the subject; I only found one work in epub format, a sort of refresher course for algebra students. The rest are all in PDF or Tex format, which I've chosen not to include here because I wanted this set to be something easily uploaded to a Kobo or other e-text reader and equally easily-read -- no resizing or formatting needed. There are also many math books here on Internet Archive's American Libraries, as well as Hathi Trust, and GoogleBooks. I've limited this collection to grammar, literature, and science; some of the upper-grade readers have non-fiction works on history as well. You can find full volumes of high school-level history, social studies, fine arts, and practical technology (carpentry, electricity, et al) on PG and IA. Some recommended multi-book sets: America (six volumes), by Joel Cook; The Great Events by Famous Historians (1-14, 17, and 21 -- the rest can be found here on IA); Great Men and Famous Women (8 volumes); The Journal of Negro History (approximately six volumes; more can be found on Hathi Trust); The 1911 edition of Encylopedia Britannica (which, as of yet, only goes up to the 'M's; Bartleby's has the rest but beware of pop-up ads). The sequel to this collection is here, in PDF format: https://archive.org/details/a-classic-american-education50+ PDFs of vintage public domain educational books, from the 1870's through 1924. These books cover grades K-3, 4-6, 7-8, Teaching, and Miscellany. For modern history, PG also has a collection of State of the Union and Inaugural addresses from Washington to Obama, as well as FDR's Fireside Chats; several volumes of slave narratives collected in the 1930's; federal commissions on 9/11 and JFK's assassination; the Nuremberg War Crimes trials; modern guides to US national parks; US Gov't papers on scientific study; current world facts & figures via the CIA; and recent achievements by NASA are also available. The most recent works of fiction only go from 1923 up to about 1963, and these are largely pulp science fiction and young adult novel series, like Penny Parker's mysteries, Dave Dawson's WWII exploits, and Rick Brant's science adventures. I've included two teaching texts from Ontario, but there are other books on the art of this profession available at the above sources, or simply consult your local brick & mortar library for ideas.
