Chronicle of Michael the Great, Patriarch of the Syrians
English translation of the 13th-century Armenian abridgements of Michael's Chronicle. The Chronicle was compiled in Syriac by Michael, Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church (1166-1199) from earlier historians, some of whose works are lost. It also contains Michael's invaluable description of his own era. Michael's work covers the period from Creation until 1195, and is probably the longest medieval chronicle known in the West. Unfortunately, only one Syriac manuscript has survived, damaged at the beginning and with lacunae. The work was translated and abridged in Armenian twice in the first half of the 13th century. More than 60 Armenian manuscripts of this work survive, most likely surviving because of their shorter length, and more engaging narrative style. Translated from the Classical Armenian editions of Jerusalem, 1870 and Jerusalem, 1871 by Robert Bedrosian, in 378 bookmarked and searchable pdf pages. Includes several beautiful maps from Heinrich Kiepert's Atlas Antiquus (Berlin, 1869). Attached to the document is a multilingual HTML version and links to additional resources.
