Genealogy of the Imperial Ottoman Family 2005
This genealogical study is the first publication of our family association, HANEDAN - Maison d'Osman, based in Paris, France, and composed of members spread out over some fifteen countries.
Descendants of a Family which had not only greatly influenced but also dominated the history of Asia Minor, of Near and Middle East, of the Balkans, of the countries bordering the Black Sea, of North Africa and of Eastern Europe for nearly seven centuries, they perpetuate in our present time the dynasty of one of the greatest sedentary and non-colonial empires of the world, the only one to last for so long â with the Habsburg empire â under the leadership of a single dynasty and one in direct line of succession.
In fact, the Ottoman Family (Âl-i-Osmân) held the throne for 641 years, from 1281 to 1922. Its sovereigns, all Sunni Muslems, ruled as Caliphs over the Islamic world for 408 years, from 1516 to 1924 (twenty-nine Caliphs, for 428 years until the death of the 101st Caliph, AbdülMedjid Efendi, in 1944). Their multinational empire, the forerunner of the contemporary federal system, was one of the most important civilisations of the second millenium of our era.
During the last twenty odd years, we have witnessed the publication of a large number of books on Ottoman history, arts, economy and politics. And yet, few dealt with the dynastic or genealogical aspects. To establish the current state of the Ottoman Family in 2005 - such is the purpose of this study.
In fact, this work is a continuation of the works of Anthony-Dolphin ALDERSON, Yilmaz ÖZTUNA, Murat BARDAKCI, and of our cousins Osman Selaheddine OSMANOGLU and Prof. Dr. Edhem ELDEM. But it also complements them by offering up-to-date informations, more detailed, duly checked and confirmed by those concerned.
Thus, the first part is devoted to the genealogy of the family, set out according to the branches of descendants of a sovereign. The most appropriate starting point seemed to us to be Sultan Mahmud II, since he was the sole male survivor of the dynasty when he acceded to the throne in 1808. The genealogical branch of each of his sons - the Sultans AbdülMedjid Khan I and AbdülAziz Khan -, and of his grand-sons - the Sultans Mehmed Murad Khan V, AbdülHamid Khan II, Mehmed Reshad Khan V, Mehmed Vahideddin Khan VI and the Caliph AbdülMedjid II -, are studied in a detailed manner.
An index of geographic locations - the places, towns, regions, countries - where major events in the life of each descendant took place (birth, marriage, death and burial) constitute the second part.
Finally, an index of names, with reference to relevant genealogical branches, ends this work.
